Eagles Weekly Wrap 2023-11-08

Wednesday 8th November 2023

Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage

Below is our Wrap of the games that took place in week 6 of the 2023/24 season.

Saturday 4th November 2023

York Eagles II v City of Leeds II

U14 Jr NBL North Conference 1

Result: 41-48 (L)

Player of the game: Jake Richardson (12pts,6rebs,4asts)

Coach Steve Hardisty commented on the U14s II performance:

“The lads knew what was required to win the game, as we early to go through the assignments. We did some of it and didn’t do the big one which was to stop letting one player dictate the game (which he did). As a coach, I try to be the ‘perfectionist’, because I know what the group are capable of… however, I was very proud of the team's effort in the manner in which we lost, we gained character which we have been missing.”

York Eagles V Padgate Aces

U14 Jr NBL Girls North Conference

Result: 83-24 (W)

Player of the game: THE WHOLE TEAM!

Coach Ghada Khattab Commented on the U14s Performance:

“The girls gave another excellent performance this weekend. After a tricky first quarter which was a bit rushed and disorganised, we recovered quickly and maintained a brilliant offense till the end of the game. I’m very proud of the girls for getting better at listening to advice and applying it. We improved key areas of defence that were allowing cutters in, and everyone made fantastic rebounds followed by ruthless fastbreaks. We were spoiled in the game with 4 players getting double figures with Maya leading the way with 27pts but closely followed by Danika, Amelie and Grace.”

Notable Performances:

Danika Croft – 19pts,8rebs,3stls

Amelie Hetherton – 14pts,10Rebs,5asts,3blks

Grace Roberts – 14pts,3rebs

Zofia Parsons – 10pts,7rebs,7stls

Katherine Hirst – 10pts,3asts

Maya Foulkes – 8pts,8rebs,6asts

York Eagles @ Leeds LDM

U12 Yorkshire League

Result: 24-59 (L)

Player of the game: Fraser Little

Coach Kaiden Farrington commented on the U12s Performance:

“Saturday’s game against Leed was a tough one as they were quickies and more physical. We seemed to be startled by the fact they were pressing us and how in our faces they were which is an area to coach for myself, beating a press. On the defensive end we need to work on rebounding and working as a team to stop scorers. On more of a positive note, the final quarter was our best, as we scored 14 of our 24 pts then, we seemed more confident, and played as a team. A couple of players I thought were outstanding, Harry Kim and Fraser Little being standouts, efforts on both ends of the court and getting stuck in. Fraser pipped it for player of the game, as he forced turnovers from them and gave his all until the final buzzer. Onto the next…”

York Eagles II V Teeside Lions

U16 Jr NBL North Conference 1

Result: 45-66 (L)

Player of the Game: Ralph Smith (14pts/3rebs)

Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16s Performance:

“We started slowly and poorly, as we weren’t ready to go from the tip-off. There was a lack of continuity, between the players throughout the game, which was partly due to the low numbers at training this week. A common theme of missing layups, when we did create chances. We will work hard at training next week, ready to go the following weekend.”

Sunday 5th November 2023

York Eagles V East Durham Lions

U14 JR NBL North Conference 1

Result: 83-45 (W)

Player of the Game: Jack Bishop (26pts/8rebs)

Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14s Performance:

“The lads really picked themselves up on Sunday after a small setback the week previous in our first loss v Doncaster, knowing that East Durham Lions would struggle against our speed and strength, I expected us to get going straight away and not look back, however, poor fundamentals and focus in our warmup led to us being behind after 5 mins. We slowly got going thanks to Luke and Jack taking more commitment in offence to drive and score. But we also switched on defensively as the game grew. 4th Quarter may have been the best we’ve played all season, ball motion was very good, still lacked end production at times and certain few need more confidence to go to do and not allow the same players to do it. Our plays are starting to look better too. Just need the energy from the 4th, all game, then we can stretch teams and become more of a threat in the league.”

Rounding up week 6 of the season, Associate Head Coach, Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the club's progression over this term.

“The club is definitely heading in a direction which is exciting to watch. Our U14s Girls are still unbeaten and seemingly unmatched so far, our U14s A have only lost one game all season and are a team to watch. Both of our U16s teams have had a mixed bag of results, but once team chemistry starts to develop then watch the teams shine. Our U18s are a team knowing it's going to be a year of experiences and learning, playing at the highest level of ball at their age, and we hope to register more wins in the coming weeks. Was also great to see our younger teams get some spotlight; our U14s B (all year down) are having success having won 2 games already and are pushing themselves this year in terms of development, knowing next season is their year to really push for a title. Was great to see our U12s start their season, even though with a loss, it's always good to see our youngsters get some game time to put practice into game situations.

Our new kit is arriving this week to add to the new identity in which the club is heading and the club now becoming relevant to York, as mentioned last Friday in the York Press, regarding Coach John’s tribute for early 2024 (LA Trip).
