Eagles Weekly Wrap 2023-11-05

Wednesday 15th November 2023

Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage

Below is our Wrap of the games that took place in week 7 of the 2023/24 season. All games were held with a minute of silence before the game.

Saturday 11th November 2023

York Eagles II v East Durham Lions

U14 Jr NBL North Conference 1

Result: 42-65 (L)

Player of the game: Cameron Stewart (16pts/1reb/x2 3PM)

Coach Steve Hardisty commented on the U14s II performance:

“Another loss against a taller team, who were good, but not exceptional. More work is required on decision-making through transition and in general offence, when running plays. Discipline and effort on both ends weren’t what they usually are, and we need to become more clinical in front of the basket. The boys know what is needed. On a positive note, it was great to see Taylor Jackson return in an Eagles uniform after a long stint out with injury. Cameron also had a fine game offensively, as he was one of the few that committed and shot well from behind the arc."

Notable Performances:

Oscar Longbottom – 7pts/3stls/2rebs

Conor Camplin – 2pts/8rebs/5blks

York Eagles V Teeside Lions

U14 Jr NBL North Conference 1

Result: 73-58 (W)

Player of the game: Caleb Flitcroft (18pts/9rebs)

Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage Commented on the U14s Performance:

“A tough fixture in our first of four home games in a row, knowing a win would really get us kicking in the league with having 3 easier games in the following weeks. Knowing Teesside’s structure and their expected setup we knew the task at hand. All the coaching staff for the U14s are very critical in training and games at the moment as we aim to really push and develop these talented young players. We had a great start again at home, with good ball movement and were aggressive in committing to our end product. Our defence still needs tweaking and work but is slowly improving, but this was the most we conceded all season. We had 64 rebounds, with some even on the offensive glass, but again we had our usual 2nd quarter blip in which we struggle on offense to keep it simple and move the ball, often giving away turnovers or not finishing simple layups. However, I could not fault the 4th quarter as we came from behind and won 27-9 to walk away with a massive win. 6-1 for the season.

Notable Performances:

Jack Bishop – 14pts/14rebs/2blks

Sam Ho – 11pts/10rebs/6stls/4asts

James Wormald – 10pts/7rebs/7asts

Luke Lattimore-Bahrij – 10pts/8rebs/5asts

York Eagles II @ City of Edinburgh Kings

U16 Jr NBL North Conference 1

Result: 51-68 (L)

Player of the game: Joe Coyle (14pts/5rebs)

Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16s Performance:

“A first ‘international’ game for the lads as we travelled into Scotland early Saturday morning. With only 9 players as well, we knew it would be a tough game. Unfortunately, we turned the ball over too much, and let the Kings get too many easy layups as we didn’t challenge them enough on defence, we finished the game with 11 total fouls which shows that the group needs to be more aggressive. On to the next…”

York Eagles V City of Edinburgh Kings

U18 Jr NBL Northern Premier

Result: 57-71 (L)

Player of the Game: Freddie Marshall (17pts/x4 3PM)

Coach Rod Gimarangan commented on the U18s Performance:

“We played good offence and defence from the 1st to 3rd quarter, however, in the final quarter, fatigue set in which ended up having loads of missed shots, which they took advantage of. The long journey again wasn’t ideal for some and also having only 5 true U18s play again wasn’t good as we had 5 U16s play up.”

Sunday 12th November 2023

York Eagles Inter-Club Tournament

U11s Boys Black V U11s Boys Red V U12s Girls

Coach David Veige & Ghada Khattab commented on the U11s & U12s Girls Performance:

U11s – “The first match between the U11s boys' teams showed some really great fast breaks, heads up and vision of the court. First looks were to pass and move the ball up the court for layup opportunities. The scoring was very close with both teams showing up on defence. Also, credit to the girls who played really well, an outstanding 3-pointer and some excellent rebounding. Overall, both teams showed up with determination in their first match together."

U12s Girls – “Fantastic to get some games for our newly founded U12s Girls team. Special mention to Florence who was brilliant in taking responsibility as point guard and her passing was awesome and to Meg Thether who got some great rebounds and managed a 3-pointer! (An accidental one but hey…)”

York Eagles V Hartlepool Huskies

U14 Jr NBL Girls North Conference

Result: 63-46 (W)

Player (s) of the Game:

Zofia Parsons (10pts/13stls/7rebs)

Maya Foulkes (20pts/4asts/3rebs/x1 3PM)

Grace Roberts (11pts/5rebs/4stls/x1 3PM)

Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U14s Girls performance:

“This was a tough game for the girls which lasted 2.15 hours due to endless stoppages, which required quite a bit resilience, which they demonstrated. While we won every quarter, the score remained too close for comfort in the first three quarters, and a string of fouls marked our performance. But we kept our resolve to take control of the game and we really shone in the 4 th quarter winning comfortably. I’m so proud of the girls for playing under difficult circumstances, including losing two players through injury and fouls. Their defence was solid and their passing and movement in transition was outstanding!”

Notable Performances:

Amelie Hetherton – 8pts/7rebs/3blks

Molly Jones – 2pts/12rebs

York Eagles V Sheffield Elite Basketball Academy

U16 Jr NBL Northern Premier

Result: 64-57 (W)

Player of the Game: Emilis Vildziunas (22pts/12rebs/5stls/3blks)

Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U16s performance:

“Sheffield brought a strong, physical post-game with some good outside shooting which caused us problems at times.

But with some disciplined defence and trust in our brand of basketball and making sure we ran our plays, we would

eventually take control. The result could easily have been different as we trailed for long periods, but Eagles ‘Heart & Hustle’ saw us want it more and come out with a big win.”

Rounding up week 7 of the season, Associate Head Coach, Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the week:

“A new look for the club as our kit arrived and looks absolutely amazing on the players who all have the same kits on

from U11s to u18s, creating team identity. I visited some of the Sponsors in person as we thanked them for their support.

We also had the u13s do a litter pick from our home at York College to centre of York as their kickstart the fundraising

campaign for their Los Angeles Trip for Easter 2024."

To the Basketball on the court…

3 wins and 3 tough losses this week in National League games.

Our U14s Girls are still unbeaten this season as they beat a tough Huskies side late on Sunday evening, moving to 6-0

for the season into a 2-week break, time for the coaches to really push them in training, ready for their biggest game of

the season, City of Leeds on 2nd December.

Our U14s 1 are continuing their developmental journey as they move to 6-1 for the season as they fought back against

a stern Teeside Lions, a good comeback win. Now onto some more comfortable matches, we hope.

Our U16s 1 are back to winning ways as they beat Yorkshire Rivals Sheffield Elite in a very intense encounter, which was a nail-biting game as it went back and forth. 2 of our teams (U16s 2 and U18s) went international as they travelled to Scotland but came short twice as Edinburgh Kings, but hope they enjoyed the experience.

Our U14s 2 came short against a much taller East Durham Lions side, as they struggled to make things happen consistently and lacked aggression. We also had a first match for our youngest members of the club as they all enjoyed an inter-club tournament between

the U11s Boys and u12s Girls.”

One VERY busy week means a quiet weekend coming up. (Only 4 Games)
