OUR WEEKLY ROUNDUP – CHECK OUT THE SCORES AND COACHES’ COMMENTS ON THE TEAM’S PERFORMANCES.
SATURDAY 17th FEBRUARY 2024
York Eagles v Leeds LDM
U12 Girls Yorkshire
Result: 14-52 (Loss)
Player (s) of the game:
Meg Thether, Alice Kitchingman & Yue Fay Ng
Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U12s Girls' performance:
“The girls brought their energy and enthusiasm to a game that some of them are still very much in the early stages of learning. With some players having only been with us for a few weeks, this was an opportunity to get a taste of what it is like to play in a match and to work together as a team. They worked hard for the ball and managed to get themselves in good offensive positions, but they are still learning how to move the ball effectively and avoid costly turnovers. There’s a lot for us to take away from this experience and work on in training, and I am confident that the girls will keep coming back stronger and better. Alice showed great skill on defence on positioning; Meg is confident with moving the ball and making attempts to the basket, and Yue Fay finds the right space and is always here, there, and everywhere on defence.”
York Eagles I @ Teesside
U14 JNBL North Conference 1
Result: 49-65 (Win)
Player of the Game:
Iker Chavana Martinez
Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14s' performance:
“A game of two halves for us, first half we were poor in defensive transition and lacked the intensity to stop them driving as our help defence was poor. After a firm chat at half time, the lads came out better as we stopped up on defence with Iker leading the way, but things to work on; shooting, finishing through contact and spacing. We are still targeting 20 league wins.”
Notable Performances:
Samuel Ho – 16pts/5asts/4stls
James Wormald – 13pts/10rebs/2blks
York Eagles v Hartlepool Huskie
U14 JNBL Girls North Conference 1
Result: 93-44 (Win)
Player of the game:
Grace Roberts – 26pts/2rebs/2asts
Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U14s Girls' Performance:
“The girls have been rising to my challenge for them to increase their scoring and lead with every match, and last weekend was no exception. After a slightly slow start, they got into the groove and worked together on defence, forming a moving wall which stopped any drivers in their track. Everyone worked hard on rebounds, and these were often followed by great movement in transition and a finish to match. After a dominant first half, we let our guard down a little in the 3rd quarter, when the Huskies came back fighting, but this was short-lived and we delivered an electrifying 4th quarter, with a bit of 3pt contest from Maya, Amelie and a few Huskies players. Grace was excellent with some fab footwork allowing her to beat defenders easily. Maya had a double-double and was constantly talking to her teammates; Amelie for a good all-round performance and blocks and Danika for clean execution and high scoring percentage.”
Notable Performances:
Maya Foulkes – 18pts/10asts
Amelie Hetherton – 14pts/4rebs/3blks
Danika Croft – 16pts/2rebs
SUNDAY 18th FEBRUARY 2024
York Eagles II v City of Edinburgh
U16 JNBL North Conference 1
Result: 57-59 (Loss)
Player of the game:
Ralph Smith – 16pts/6rebs/3stls
Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16s II performance:
“A very back and forth game, knowing it would be a close encounter, we failed to deliver in the 1st Q, as we were sloppy with the ball, defence wasn’t what we worked on, 2nd and 3rd Quarters we won, thanks to some good shooting from Ralph and Samson, and addition of Noah inside, kept us in it. 4th was also very back and forth, but missed layups and failure to rebound of their free throw, won them the game. If we play like we do in the 2nd and 3rd, we will win more games…”
Notable Performances:
Samson Frusher – 15pts/x3 3PM (13pts in Q3)
Noah Cronwright – 11pts/10rebs/3asts/4stls
York Eagles v City of Edinburgh
U18 JNBL Northern Premier
Result: 71-68 (Win)
Players of the game:
Korbin Evans – 23pts/5rebs
Dimitri Kotidis – 12pts/9asts/5rebs
Coach Kostas Kotidis commented on the U18s' Performance:
“On Sunday, the U18s Premier boys' squad had a rendezvous with their destiny. It was a must-win game to determine their fate and to avoid engaging in playoffs to avoid relegation. The group came through in fine style. Despite, all the usual issues with numbers, lack of training together, lack of conditioning and so many others… they delivered. We played strong, gutsy defence and we made the most of our offence. Freddie might not have been his usual “killer” from the arc, but Korbin, Dimitri, and George and others filled the gaps. Congratulations to everyone, this was a TEAM performance and win. They have shown that they can step up when the circumstances demand it. Let’s refocus to the next game v Trafford, before a date with local rivals QE hoping to finish the job. We want it to be our choice next season whether we play Premier or conference, our choice…”
Notable Performances:
Freddie Marshall – 14pts/6rebs/x4 3PM
George Andrews – 9pts/8rebs/4stls/1blk
Billy Donaghy – 6pts/10rebs/1blk
