Report by Tyler Paton-Pottage

OUR WEEKLY ROUNDUP – CHECK OUT THE SCORES AND COACHES’ COMMENTS ON THE TEAM’S PERFORMANCES.
SATURDAY 20TH JANUARY 2024
York Eagles V Grimsby Phoenix
U14 North Conference I
Result: 63-35 (Win)
Player (s) of the game:
Samuel Ho – 16pts/7rebs/6stls
Jack Bishop – 12pts/10rebs/3blks
Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on the U14s performance:
“Coach Kev and I both agreed, and we talked to the team afterward about creating better mindsets pre-game and how we conduct ourselves on the court, today was an off day (I hope), and hope that the game was a character development, especially leading into some crunch games! We lacked energy throughout as were drawn into a gritty and physical game with Phoenix, which we expected, but lacked intensity in drive in what we were aiming to do. We were generally sloppy with the ball with over-dribbling and bad passes = 16 turnovers. We have got to hustle more (sprinting up and down the court, rebounding and diving for the ball), so the lads expect a tough training week where the Coaches will demand this!”
Notable Performances:
Caleb Flitcroft – 8pts/5asts
Sam Smales – 6pts/14rebs/5blks
Hayden Fogg – 6pts/5stls/5rebs
York Eagles Red v York Eagles Black
U11s Exhibition Game
Result: 39-27
Coach Adam Wilson commented on the U11s performance:
“The u11s had a great inter-squad game on Saturday. The teams were joined by a few brand-new players who laced really well and were welcomed into the teams by the other players brilliantly. The Red Eagles got off to a strong start in the first quarter with good rebounding, fast breaks, and finishing shots. The Black Eagles rallied and were a lot more competitive in the remaining three quarters. Both passed the ball well and worked hard running the floor to the end. Both teams needed to work on spacing on the floor on offence and sticking to their men on defence, but overall, both teams had a performance to be proud of.”
York Eagles @ Newcastle Eagles
U16 Northern Premier
Result: 73-80 (Loss)
Player of the Game:
Emilis Vildziunas – 27pts/11rebs
Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U16s performance:
“A frustrating loss for us this weekend, against a Newcastle side that ultimately wanted it more than we did. We failed to hit 2nd gear until half time but we’re in contention, we then started scoring but at the same time Newcastle hit back-to-back 3-pointers which extended their lead. After some tough offensive calls against Vildziunas he eventually fouled out, and this left us lacking in the post for the final 2 minutes of the game. We ran them close with some intensive “Punch” in the final quarter but today we lost due to passive man defence which is uncharacteristic of us and unforced turnovers from travels, fouls, and poor passing. We will regain the status of the superior Eagles team when they come to us next month.”
Notable Performances:
George Andrews – 12pts/8rebs
SUNDAY 21ST JANUARY 2024
York Eagles 2 @ East Durham Lions
U1 North Conference 1I
Result: 47-74 (Loss)
Player of the game:
Leo Frusher – 13pts/13rebs
Coach Kris Gladwin commented on the U14s 2 performance:
“A bad day at the office, unfortunately. A promising 1st Q left us trailing by only 5pts in an attempt to respond to a previous 20pts home loss. Unfortunately, the 2nd Q saw us barely trouble the scoreboard leaving behind even more come HT. The lads did come out firing in the 3rd and won the quarter, and looked to continue it into the final quarter but the gap was too much. While not a dirty game both teams fouled out in all but the last with the refs a little harsh on some calls. Obvious work needs to be done with Free Throws and majorly work on our defensive transition as we aloud Lions to get fast breaks too often.”
York Eagles v Leeds LDM
U13 Yorkshire League
Result: 50-49 (Win)
Player of the Game:
Jake Richardson – 15pts/3rebs/3asts
Coach Azaan Iyer commented on the U13s performance:
“In a thrilling U13s basketball clash, Eagles emerged victorious with a nail-biting 1-point win with a sensational game-winning (AND-1) by Jake Richardson. The team displayed exceptional enthusiasm throughout the game, fostering a positive atmosphere on the court. Constant support and encouragement from teammates brought out the best in each player. The defensive effort showcased moments of brilliance, but the team acknowledged the need for improvement in help defense.”
Notable Performances:
Henderson Ho – 10pts/8rebs
James Clayton – 7pts/6rebs
York Eagles v Leeds LDM
U12s Yorkshire League
Result: 34-75 (Loss)
Player of the game:
Caden Barnsley
Coach James Searson commented on the U12s performance:
“Tough game against a well-drilled LDM team who won 100 miles an hour straight out of the blocks. We on the other hand were slow to start and looked unsure of ourselves and struggled against the full-court press, something we will look at in training. Offensively our positioning was poor, we had a lack of movement and there was a lot of ball-watching today. Our fast breaks were not too bad, but we missed a lot of easy layups. Defensively started poorly but growing into the game, by the fourth quarter the lads seemed to have the grip between the teeth, especially Hardy. Onward and upwards. Let’s go Eagles.”
Notable Performances:
Raylan Durkin – 10pts
George FitzThomas – 10pts
York Eagles 2 @ Newcastle Eagles II
U16 North Conference I
Result: 58-87 (Loss)
Player of the game:
Alex Holloway
Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16s 2 Performance:
“Competed well for the first 17 minutes. We weren’t composing ourselves well in the last three minutes before half time and we’re down 8pts and unable to keep up in the second half there were too many turnovers which led to fast rates for Newcastle and by then the gap was too big to make a comeback.”
