Our weekly roundup of Week 13  – Check out the scores and coaches' comments on the teams' performance.

SUNDAY 14TH JANUARY 2024

York Eagles @ City of Leeds Gold

U12 Yorkshire League

Result: 58-13 (Loss)

Player of the Game: Raylan Durkin – 5pts

York Eagles @ City of Leeds Black

U12 Yorkshire League

Result: 41-36 (Win)

Player of the game: George FitzThomas – 18pts

Coach Kaiden Farrington commented on the U12s performances:

“Double game day this week, 5 players from the U11s played up and a few ill players, but the team showed great resilience and tried their best against a tough team who had a lot more players. Positives from this week are we won 1, lost 1, so a lot of things to improve on but saw some really good flashes of improvement. I want to say well done to the 5 U11s players, they came into a team that they had not trained or played with this season and showed grit and determination playing well with each other doing very well against players who were bigger than them, with that being said my player of the day was Tom Baxter, he has come into the team and played brilliantly, rebounding, beating a press and showing great playmaking ability. Well done Eagles, onto the next!”

U12s PLAYER OF THE DAY – TOM BAXTER

York Eagles @ St Helens Saints

U18 Jr NBL Northern Premier

Result: 57-85 (Loss)

Player of the Game:

Freddie Marshall – 24pts (x6 3s)

Coach Rod Gimarangan commented on the U18s performance:

“The team is starting to show signs of improvement as we are scoring more but more importantly allowing other teams to score less. We have big games coming up and hoping to get some more positive results.”

York Eagles 2 @ East Durham Lions

U16 Jr NBL North Conference 1

Result: 76-66 (Win)

Player of the game: Alex Holloway – 14pts

Coach Reece Horton commented on the U16s 2 performance:

“A good team win, which was a scrappy one with 31 fouls, but we did play some good defence when it mattered. A nice spread of scorers and the group did well dealing with the Lions press at the end. Holloway was MVP today as he kept the team together and scored when we needed to.”

York Eagles @ Sheffield Advance

U13 Yorkshire League

Result: 12-89 (Win)

Player of the Game: Oscar Longbottom – 12pts/4asts

Coach Steve Hardisty commented on the U13s performance:

“Even before stepping on the court to see Sheffield warm up, it was clear that our strong U13 team would ease to victory. The test was the manner in which the boys would take it. Whilst it was enjoyable for the boys, it would be fair to say that they didn’t follow the game plan, which was to seek to use the game to try and work on some more technical aspects of our offensive that they have struggled against the much stronger and more physical U14 teams.  That being said, after the high number of difficult games that the boys have had this season, it is difficult to blame them for wanting to stretch their legs and take some easy baskets. Despite the boys not necessarily making the most of the opportunity it was great to see them play with a smile and enjoy themselves on court.

Notable Performances:

Jack Bishop – 12pts/7rebs/1blk

Bertie Hardisty – 14pts/3rebs

Leo Frusher -12pts

Cameron Stewart – 19pts/3rebs/2blks

York Eagles v Leicester Riders

U16 Jr NBL Northern Premier

Result: 72-55 (Win)

Player of the game: Eddy Wragg – 14pts (11pts in the 4Q), x2 3s

Coach Paul Pickering commented on the U16s performance:

“A very good performance against the formidable Riders who wanted revenge after beating them by single figures earlier in the season. However, the lads out-hustled and outran them and played with tenacity to get the hoop with aggression. We crashed both boards for a change too, and then it was great to see the guess play with a bit of swagger in the 4th, thanks to Eddy heating up with 11pts in the 4th and Emilis pouring the points in. Big game v Newcastle and the race for 4th is heating up.”

Notable Performances:

Emilis Vildziunas – 29pts/19rebs/2blks

York Eagles @ Barrow Thorns

U14 Jr NBL Girls North Conference

Result: 25-106 (Win)

Player(s) of the game:

Amelie Hetherton – 26pts/8asts/3blks

Danika Croft – 28pts

Coach Ghada Khattab commented on the U14s Girls' Performance:

“The girls were back in force this week after the Christmas break, and even a long journey across the Lake District didn’t slow them down. Their passing was fast and furious while also on-target and their drives even more so. A couple of cracks in our help defence and positioning but we had a chat and sorted that out, conceding very little to Thorns. The way the girls worked together as a a team was admirable, and they increased their lead from last time to 81 points, with 4 players scoring in double figures. It was great to see Amelie back with a great offensive performance and Danika continuing her streak of ruthlessness and Maya nearly achieving a triple-double and Zofia for her usual rule of taking no prisoners on D.”

Notable performances:

Maya Foulkes – 24pts/10asts/8rebs

Zofia Parsons – 14pts/3asts/2rebs

Assistant Head Coach Tyler Paton-Pottage commented on this week's full return to training and looking ahead:

“A busy Sunday as no teams played on Saturday, and with most teams travelling far and wide, I would like to thank our parents and volunteers, with you, no games would be played! The 2nd half of the season looks exciting for us as our U14s girls aim to remain unbeaten and look for the league title, a feat which would go down in the history books for the Club, it's only our 3rd year with a girls' team and look to have a title! Incredible job by Ghada and other coaches. U14s A, although they didn’t play, also look to mount a title challenge and aim to catch Doncaster by March as they are currently 12-1. Both of our U16s are showing signs of improvement as our U16s Prem players aim to solidify 4th and look towards a debut in the NL Playoffs in April. Our U16s 2 aim to end the season with more wins but have some challenging games to go. Our U18s look to continue their learning journey life in the Premier and aim to try surviving the relegation battle come end of the season. Our U14s B are in a similar boat to U18s, playing a year up is the challenge, but one I think will benefit their development in years to come. Finally, it is great to see our U11s and u12s boys and girls back into training and hopefully to aim for more game time this spring to put their practice into motion.”
